You can't increase the fit using this method however there are other ways that may help but not reliable.So, it's better to buy a new one.

Yes I just tie both of the ends in a knot at the wrong side of jeans.

I tried it but it didn’t work for me. I have thin thread so mine didn’t work. If you’re gonna do it I recommend using a thick thread if you’re gonna try to fix your jean shorts or jeans to make them fit better
Yes I used an anchor thread which is thicker than normal thread plus it's very easy to pull and won't break easily
